Photodynamic therapy (PDT), also known as photochemotherapy, is a type of phototherapy that combines light with a photosensitizing chemical. It is well-regarded as an effective treatment strategy for addressing various skin issues, achieving therapeutic and skin rejuvenation goals efficiently, safely, and without side effects.

Several photosensitizing agents are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat certain cancers or pre-cancers.

Two widely used PDT medicines are:

  • Porfimer sodium (Photofrin): A commonly used photosensitizer activated by red light from a laser, approved by the FDA for treating certain esophagus and lung cancers. It is also being studied for other cancers.

  • Aminolevulinic acid (ALA or Levulan): Applied to the skin on the face or scalp to treat actinic keratosis (AK), a pre-cancerous condition. Activated by a special blue light.

Experts are exploring new PDT medicines, methods, and combinations with treatments like surgery, chemo, immunotherapy, and radiation therapy.
